28.Jul.2010 Social Engagement Event: “How to create a Social Media Marketing Plan”

This is the second in the series of seminars I will be doing for the Tuggerah Business Enterprise Centre this year.

In this two hour session, I will go through the benefit of having a structured social media strategy for your small or micro business. I work with small and micro businesses every day to put plans together to make the most out of social media and online marketing platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, email marketing and others.

This interactive and entertaining presentation is essential for any small or micro business owners who know a lot about social media, a bit about social media or nothing about social media but who want to find new and inexpensive ways to grow their business in the online space.

I will show you how to develop a social media marketing plan from scratch and the real life way each of these marketing tools can work in a step by step session that is interactive and fun.

27.Jul.2010 How hard do you make it for people to have a discussion on your blog?

This topic comes up a lot with small business and blogging clients. How hard – or easy – should they make it for visitors to their blog to leave a comment on an article?

Obviously, the more interaction and social engagement you have on your blog, the better it is, but I see lots of my clients making it quite difficult and in one case impossible for people to leave a comment on their blog articles and thereby start a discussion with other readers.

Actually, I used to be one of them.

I know I harp on about how good Glenn Murray‘s ebook SEO Secrets – The DIY Guide to Topping Google was for my business but this is yet another lesson I learnt from it – you should make it easy as possible for visitors to leave a comment on your blog.

On most blogs there seems to be one of three options: make the reader sign up to your site before they can leave a comment, let anyone leave a comment but moderate every one of them before they are published, or just leave it to open slather and anyone who wants to comment can – and that comment appears straight away.

The last one sounds downright scary, and yet it’s the one that Glenn advocates – and the one that I have chosen for all of my blogs. Read more ›

23.Jul.2010 The 9 Best E-Books I Ever Bought

Have you ever bought an e-book?

Or thought about writing one?

These days, electronic products including e-books and e-courses have become extremely popular and are a great resource for bloggers and online marketers like myself.

Some e-books that I bought two years ago, I still refer back to on a weekly basis and they have become an invaluable reference tool for me and my small business.

An e-book, as defined by the Oxford Dictionary of English, is “an electronic version of a printed book which can be read on a personal computer or hand-held device designed specifically for this purpose” – Wikipedia.

And I have been fortunate enough to sell a few e-books too. Most notably, my twitter e-book, 34 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started on Twitter which, I am happy to say, has been downloaded more than 3,200 times now.

So today I thought I would share with you the 9 best e-books I ever bought. The topics range from travel to photography to blogging and business growth and they are all great value with the prices of these e-books starting at just $5.95.

I have bought and read every one of these books and so I can personally recommend them. Read more ›

22.Jul.2010 A practical example of Google’s ‘Updates Search’

Google has made some changes to their search pages and there has been some talk among bloggers and web development people about whether they are even relevant.

One of the changes is the introduction of the ‘Updates Search’.

This feature basically filters the organic search results and displays them, instead of in terms of a traditional ranking as defined by the Google algorithm, in chronological order, making the search results more like the real-time results you get if you used something like Twitter Search on a particular topic or set of keywords.

So how is this relevant? Read more ›

Mobile Marketing: Make your emails mobile friendly

Mobile Marketing on The Bowditch GroupThis is the first of the series on mobile marketing from guest blogger Scott Middleton:

If you’re thinking “mobile marketing isn’t relevant to my business” then you are dead wrong.

If you’re dealing with anyone that might potentially check their email from their phone then mobile marketing is important to you.

Today, almost everyone deals with clients that use BlackBerrys, iPhones or any other type of mobile that lets them easily access their email. Some people have been booking a third seat at a restaurant for their partners BlackBerry.

You must make sure these people can read your email on their phone.

Put yourself in the mind of someone reading your email from their phone. They’re either sitting on public transport, rushing between meetings or out and about. They need to be able to quickly digest whatever it is you send them.

Here are 5 tips to make sure the emails you send are mobile friendly. Read more ›

I am a massive believer in learning something new every day. I am also a massive believer in engaging mentors for your own business growth because nobody knows everything and as soon as you start thinking you do, you are doomed to fail.

Something I know a fair bit about is how to build a well-read, well-trafficked blog and the importance of blogging in terms of Search Engine Optimisation, Social Engagement, as well as building brand awareness.

But I certainly don’t know everything about blogging and I am always keen to learn more about it.

Enter Darren Rowse of ProBlogger fame. Darren is an Aussie guy who is an international blogging success story. What Darren doesn’t know about blogging probably isn’t really worth knowing. I have learnt so much from his blogs and actually a lot of my blogging success to him. Read more ›
